Do You Know The Difference Between Allergies and Mold Symptoms?

My wife's entire family is plagued by allergies and asthma issues ... so the title of this post by Inspector David Snell, "Do You Know the Difference Between Allergies and Mold Symptoms?" .. really caught my attention.

I've seen the misery people suffering from these issues can have ... regardless of the cause.  But what if the symptoms are directly linked to Mold within your home?  What if the symptoms show-up suddenly or are re-occuring?

Having the information contained within Inspector David Snell's AR post could save your health and lead to addressing the issues found within your home, as well.

Should you, or someone within your home, be experiencing any of the symptoms found here ... it's definitely worth investigating the possibility of mold growth somewhere within your home.  If in David Snell's service area (Charlotte, NC), give him a call to have a mold inspection conducted.  If elsewhere in the US, there are many fine inspectors to be found here on ActiveRain ... or locally.

Gene

Via Inspector David Snell (Snell Experts):

I have spoken a lot in the past about mold and its toxic effects on humans…especially children. I have written article after article on how to find mold in your home, how to get rid of mold and even how to hire an expert in the area to help you when you are over run with mold.

What I have never talked about is how to spot the signs and symptoms of mold when you don’t know that it is in your home. Mold can grow and hide anywhere, so unless you have somebody come to your home and inspect it every few months, you could never even know what is growing in your walls or in your crawl space.

What does this mean for you? Usually when you have a cold or an illness you blame it on your kids who just started back to school, or the weather or the fact that it’s allergy season. What probably never runs through your mind is that many of your symptoms can be an exact symptom of mold inhalation and growth.

So now I think it is important to talk a little bit about these symptoms and what to look out for, when to suspect mold is an issue and how to handle it when you suspect it.

  • Constant Headache
  • Nose bleeds
  • Constant fatigue
  • Coughing up blood
  • Loss of appetite
  • Weight loss
  • Breathing problems
  • Sexual Dysfunction
  • Chronic sinus infections

These are just the most common signs and symptoms of mold exposure. Now, I know firsthand what going to the doctor and saying “I think I have been exposed to mold” will do. Mine actually looked at me like I had two heads! So, what is the first step when you suspect that your symptoms are caused by mold?

Obviously your first step is going to be to go to the doctor, but you will want to have some information to back up your claim. A mold inspection performed by a professional can give you all of the answers that you will need. When the inspector comes out to your home they will take samples of the mold for lab testing which will help to give you a better idea of what you are dealing with. Of course sending samples off to a lab takes time, but at least you will have an idea when you go to your doctor!

Seeing the Light. A Simple Guide to New Light Bulbs ...

Seeing the Light ... a Simple Guide to
New Light Bulbs

Back in 2007, a new law entitled, "The Energy Independence and Security Act" was signed.  It was expanded upon in 2010.  As a result, new requirements and efficiency standards were placed in line for the common light bulb.

Well, I walked down the light bulb aisle at Home Depot about a week ago and Wow!  Talk about confusing!  So over this  weekend, I did a little reading ... and I thought I'd share what I found.  Hopefully it will prove beneficial to you and the links provided will serve as some guide when you're shopping for light bulbs next time.

First: The bulbs that are being phased-out are the four most common incandescent bulbs used ... the 40-watt, 60-watt, 75-watt, and 100-watt bulbs.  Sales and supplies of these bulbs will not automatically cease upon the implementation date of the new standards.  Stores will be able to sell their existing supply of 100-watt incandescent bulbs until they're out of stock.  Manufacturers will not be able to produce any more of the bulbs, based on their old energy-emitting standards beyond the law's implementation date.

It's estimated that as much as 90% of the energy emitted from the old traditional incandescent bulb is wasted as heat, not light.  90%!  The newer, more energy-efficient CFL's (Compact Fluorescent Lights) and LED's  (Light-emitting Diode) can produce the same amount of light while using far less energy.

Second:  Forget the old standard terminology.  What you need to know and understand now is "lumens".  New light bulb packaging will be required to display "LIGHTING FACTS".  This should be helpful to you while trying to make a comparison of products and buying.   Here's a handy guide that will help you replace your old wattage bulbs with those rated on lumens:

  • To replace a 100-watt incandescent bulb, look for a bulb that gives you about 1600 lumens. If you want something dimmer, go for less lumens; if you prefer brighter light, look for more lumens.
  • Replace a 75W bulb with an energy-saving bulb that gives you about 1100 lumens
  • Replace a 60W bulb with an energy-saving bulb that gives you about 800 lumens
  • Replace a 40W bulb with an energy-saving bulb that gives you about 450 lumens.

Third:  Other terminology that will now become important refer to the bulbs appearance as "warm" or "cool".  The bulb you choose for a specific location will most likely be based upon your personal taste for these conditions of lighting.

Fourth:  You DO stand to save energy and money through replacement of your old bulbs with the new.  But how much?

Below is a rule-of-thumb guide, as to those savings:

  • Energy Saving Incandescents — about 25% energy savings
  • CFLs — about 75% energy savings
  • LEDs — about 75% – 80% energy savings

It's estimated that  an ENERGY STAR  CFL bulb typically lasts up to 10 times longer than your old traditional bulbs.  And ENERGY STAR qualified LED bulbs do even better,  lasting as much as 25 times longer.

Yes, these new more energy-efficient bulbs cost more initially.  That can't be argued.  But if you truly realize the savings predicted above over the life of your new bulbs ... you'll be hearing "cha-ching"!

Fifth:  So you make the decision to replace your old bulbs and invest in new, more energy-efficient ones.  What other information regarding the new bulbs will be helpful moving forward?

Because CFL's (Compact Fluorescent Lights) contain a small amount ofmercury  within them, at the end of their lifespan, these bulbs should be recycled.  That recycling can be accomplished in a variety of ways, but below are your most convenient and accessible.

Just a note too ... ENERGY STAR -qualified bulbs earn a ENERGY STAR label by meeting the energy efficiency requirements set forth in ENERGY STAR specifications. ENERGY STAR is the government-backed symbol for energy efficiency helping us all save money and protect the environment through energy-efficient products and practices.  They provide a replacement program to protect your purchase, should the bulb you buy not work.  This is a feature that could be very helpful and cost-wise, given the upfront expense of the new bulbs.

Also, please note that not all bulbs are being phased out.  Be aware that the following are not effected by the new law.  The Energy Security Act focuses primarily on "general service light bulbs."  A long list of specialty light bulbs, including plant lights, bug lights, appliance bulbs (such as refrigerator lights), colored "party" bulbs, rough service, 3-way incandescent, and candelabra base bulbs are presently on the exemption list.   Some of exceptions will be reassessed in 2020.

I hope the above information "sheds some light" on the topic of the new federal standards surrounding light bulbs for you.

The Many Uses for BEER. Count them ... 10!

With a name like  Mundt,  you gotta guess that I'm going to like a good German beer once in awhile.  Well, okay ... any good beer once in awhile ...

Gene Mundt Chicago Bancorp blog: The Many Uses for BEER. Count them ... 10!      So when I saw Cecilia Cannon's (Home Staging by C.C. - Home Staging Chicago & the North Shore)  tweet the other day, "10 Uses for Beer", you have to believe I was all over it!

In her tweet, Cecilia provided a link to her website ... ... and a great list of amazing things you can do with beer.  The list, courtesy of Rachel Ray Magazine,  hosted ideas ranging from improving your lawn to making pancakes ... all with the assistance of beer.

I immediately contacted Cecilia  to ask if I could pass the link and list on to my blog readers.  Who wouldn't want to try pancakes made with BEER???

Below you will find the 10 amazing things found on this list.  Give them a try ... and then let me know how they worked out for you.  Especially those beer pancakes ...

And oh ... if in need of staging service in the Chicago and North Shore region, contact Cecilia @ Home Staging Chicago.  She'll be able to assist you with all your staging and decorating needs.

Enjoy ... and have fun with the list below!

10 Uses For BEER!

1. Banish Brown spots on the lawn:  that's right, pour less than half a cup on the problem areas and abra-ka-dabra. The fermented sugars kill any fungus and feed the grass, allowing it to come back green . (Jess Lebow-author of The Beer Devotional.

2. Cast-iron Clean-up Time:  Pour little beer into the still warm pan. It will keep the mess from sticking and even season the pan. Ooh, la la.

3. Fluffier pancakes and waffles:  if you like fluffy pancakes-sub your beef for any liquid called for in the recipe. they will be light and airy. also, try using beer for making matzo ball an  bread!! yummo!!

4. Loosen Rusty Bolts and Screws - WHO KNEW!!:  Pour a few gulps of beer on the frozen hardware, wait a few seconds, then give it a turn. carbonation helps break down the rust.

5. Cook Juicy Chicken:  Prop a whole chicken over a half-full can of beer (the can goes into the cavity). Season with salt, pepper, spices. Beer evaporates into chicken as it cooks, creating a super moist chicken. delish!!

6. Prevent Garden Pest:  and by pest I mean bugs, not your kids. Fill small jars with beer and place them in the garden. Insects attract to the sugars-they slip in for a sip and never come out--ha! Keep those wasps and bees away at parties. you can also place a bowl several feet away from the main area and bugs will buzz away from guests.

7. Make Jewelry Sparkle:  Use a light ale and a clean towel you can polish gold jewelry to remove dirt. you can also try this on tarnished copper pots.

8. Give Your Hair Shine:  Put life back into your flat hair, yes you, by mixing 1 cup lager with 1 egg yolk and massage into strands.  leave in for a few minutes and wash with shampoo (provided by Julia March)

9. Get a Better Nights Sleep:  Wash your pillowcases in water spiked with a little beer. What?!? you say. The chemical compound dimethylvinyl carbinol, has a calming and slightly sedative effect which is an herbal remedy for insomnia. WHO KNEW! :)

10. Soothe Your Soles:  the beer enzymes soften callused feet.  Mix room temperature beer and warm peppermint tea (half and half).  Dunk those toes for 20 minutes.  Who needs a spa!

Adding Value to Your Kitchen Economically. Valuable Painting and Staining Tips for Kitchen Cabinetry ...

A short while back, Maureen Bray, from Room Solutions Home Staging, Portland, OR, was kind enough to share  a blog of hers with my readers regarding inexpensive suggestions for updating and remodeling the kitchen within your home.  Maureen's helpful blog still receives many viewers each and every day on my websiteGene Mundt Chicago Bancorp Adding Value to Your Kitchen Economically. Valuable Painting and Staining Tips for Kitchen Cabinetry

Perhaps a new home or expensive remodeling is out of the question for you right now financially, but with some elbow grease, small monetary expenditure, and effort ... you can still achieve big things and add value to your home by following these bits of advice.

The continued popularity of Maureen's post proves to me that there is definitely an eager audience hoping to learn about this topic.  So below, I've added some tips I've gathered from some top remodeling experts regarding the prepping, painting, and/or re-staining of your home's present kitchen cabinetry.

Most families will say that their kitchen often serves as the "hub" of their home.  Function, lay-out, quality of materials, appearance, trends, colors, and how to achieve the latest "hot" look ... everything about the kitchen is important, so it's also where sizeable expenditures are often made in remodeling and updating.

Painting or re-staining kitchen cabinets is an inexpensive way for homeowners to improve, refresh, and update the appearance, appeal, and value of their home without breaking the bank financially.  But this cabinet work must be performed correctly, or the appearance and desired upgrade in "value" will not be realized.

Surface preparation is key when painting or re-staining cabinetry.  Stripping cabinets to bare wood eliminates issues with adhesion of the new paint or stain, but depending on the construction of yours cabinets, good results may also be achieved by thoroughly cleaning, and then lightly sanding the old cabinets as well.  Most household cleaners will take care of the ordinary dirt and grease build-up on kitchen cabinets.  But if you smoke or cook alot, especially with cooking oils or grease, something stronger will be needed.  Consider using a cleaner with trisodium phosphate (TSP) which can be found at most hardware or paint stores, in these instances.

To help you better understand the preparation and steps needing to be taken for painting or re-staining your cabinets, watch the video below ...

Remember, the finishing touches made to your cabinets are very important.  They can mean the difference between only a "so-so" appearance and having that "wow" factor you desire.  Consider making an investment in new hardware for your newly painted and upgraded cabinetry.  Everything will look new and fresh that way ... and also be sure to be in working order.

There's a huge range of hardware styles to consider.  A suggestion is to coordinate your new hardware with the kitchen sink faucet.  This small attention to detail pulls the whole kitchen together and unifies the overall design.

Hardware for your newly-painted or stained cabinets can be trendy or personalized to the homeowners tastes, but if thinking of selling soon ... keep their installation to a minimum as an "accent".  New owners will consider making the investment in a small change for a few hardware pieces or knobs, but possibly balk at a larger expenditure of money and time to install something new of their own taste.

Painting or re-staining your kitchen cabinets can be achieved for as little as "hundreds" of dollars versus the thousands of a complete replacement or re-facing.  Take the time to prepare and then apply the new paint or stain.  Make the expenditure for excellent quality brushes, wood fillers, caulk, hardware, paint or stain.  If the correct tools of the trade are used and the time is taken to do the job well, the end result can be spectacular.  It can transform your home.

And, if not acquainted with Maureen Bray, her home staging talents, or how home staging can help you sell or improve the appearance of your home ... check-out  Maureen's businesswebsite or her blog on ActiveRain: http://activerain.com/blogs/roomsolutions.

Recycle AND Save at Target - Super Target Lake Worth Florida

I thought this information from  Michelle Gibson, Hansen Real Estate Group, South Wellington, Florida ... regarding Target's recycling efforts (and opportunity for savings) so worthy of note and re-blogging.

Who of us doesn't have a zillion of those darn pesky plastic bags collecting around our house?  Now we have another handy and convenient drop-off for them, instead of the landfill.

Great News!  Thanks Michelle!

Recycle AND Save at Target - Super Target Lake Worth Florida

The next time you shop at your local Target make sure to bring your reusable bags because they will give you 5₵ for each recyclable bag you use.  While Target sells recyclable bags you don't have to buy or use theirs in order to get the credit, the bag just has to be an actual reusable shopping bag, not plastic.

Target Recycling Stations - Reusable Recycling Bags at Target

Target also has recycling stations at the front of each store. Last year they launched their "recycling program" to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Earth Day and put a  recycling station at every store across the nation.  Now Target customers can recycle aluminum, glass and plastic beverage containers, plastic bags, MP3 players, cell phones and ink cartridges right at the store.

The Home Energy Savings Program is Initiated to Help Naperville, IL Residents Go "GREEN"!

Naperville, IL

The City of Naperville, Illinois is helping is residents to go "green" and save money through its recently enacted Home Energy Savings Program.

Now open to all ages of Naperville homeowners (once only to 55+ residents), this new program was made available to the municipality through a Department of Energy grant in the amount of $700,000.  This grant is part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.  The grant was received at a cost of zero dollars to the City.  It is one of two "green" programs offered within Naperville currently.  The other is the "Greener Business Program", available to Naperville businesses also wishing to savcity inspectore energy dollars.

City inspectors perform the FREE testing within Naperville residents homes.

Inspectors look for utilities that may need updating or those presently running inefficiently.  Air leaks, poor insultation, and more are also discovered and identified.  It takes certified inspectors approximately 1 1/2 hours to do a whole house check.  Infrared cameras used during the inspections show homeowners exactly where their homes are leaking air and driving their energy costs up.

Residents receive a full report from the City of Naperville identifying what was discovered within their home during the audit in approximately two weeks time.  This report offers suggestions that will help the residents improve their home's "green" quotient.  The report also includes a analysis of savings expected if homeowners follow the suggestions for improvemeelectrical meternts and upgrades within their home.

Homeowners receiving this audit can receive reimbursement for the costs of the improvements they  make, up to 50% ... with a maximum $1500 limit.  "Green" improvements can include major items such as new heating, A/C, insulation, and windows down to small improvements such as incandescent light bulbs.

Presently the city's inspection teams are booked solid until June.  The City of Naperville has decided to continue to give out audits until the entire funding from this program is depleted even though the original maximum of 350 slots/requests have been filled.  A waiting-list has been enacted for those residents wishing to still take part in this program.

Be aware that the $1500 reimbursement benefit is not in effect on any audits performed after the 350 original slots.  The city is strongly recommending that its residents still have an inspection done though.  They believe the energy audit and the resulting energy savings reaped with improvements made within their homes will prove beneficial to all taking part.energy efficiency

To meet the necessary requirements for this free energy audit, the residential property must lie within the City of Naperville limits and been built before the year of 1980.

For further information regarding this beneficial "green" offer and possible monetary reimbursements for energy improvements, contact the City of Naperville by calling (630) 420-6077 and refer to the Home Energy Savings Program.  The City can also be reached through their website at:  www.naperville.il.us/hesp.aspx
